One worker died and two others were seriously injured following an explosion inside a West Kendall auto body shop Wednesday morning, Miami-Dade police said.
The three men were airlifted to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital by Miami-Dade fire rescue, but one of the men - whose entire body was burned, according to police - died Wednesday afternoon.
Two other men were treated by paramedics in front of the body shop, Chassis & Frame, 12528 SW 128th St. Both were released afterward.
Police did not release the victims' names pending notification of family.
Several people called 911 just before 10:30 a.m. after hearing the explosion. Fire rescue arrived at 10:34 a.m. and found two men on fire in the street, said Lt. Eric Baum.
``According to witnesses, the men were possibly doing some welding,'' Baum said. ``They use acetylene, which is an extremely dangerous and volatile chemical.
``The guys were blown back out of the business 10 to 15 feet,'' he added.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the acetylene was the cause of the explosion.
One of the seriously injured men was identified by friends as Hector Lasprilla, who owns the shop and lives in West Kendall, state records show.
